MIND SKILLS
As a preparation for conquering  the hills of happiness or  seeking long term
achievements, you have  to acquire certain skills. This section focuses only at the
mental skills that will be very useful in achieving the defined objectives and goals.
One sure way of achieving all the skills of mind refinementl  mentioned below, could
be to  practise meditation, regularly. Five to ten minutes a day is more than sufficient,
to begin with. However with more practice you would certainly plan to spend
more hours,  if you do it in the correct way.

Agility of the mind
The agility of the mind means, its ability to move from one objective to another. An
agile mind can be very active  and sensitive; is swift ,and moves very fast. In
contrast, a mind that is not agile  is lazy. It is very slow in picking up or reacting to
new  situations. It is tardy, slothful and lacks the ability or willingness to move. It is
like an old  sick elephant.

The mind loses its agility temporarily, when your body is tired, or intoxicated with
liquor, or suffering from over eating, or when you are sick. Too much of sugar also
can reduce the agility of the mind. When the mind is less active, it is open to
manipulations by outside sources. A lazy mind is slow to react to new ideas, and
when such ideas are entertained, it is difficult, even to get rid of such harmful
ideas. Therefore, it is highly desirable to practise exercises that will increase
the agility of your mind.

One of the benefits of increasing the agility of your mind is,  that it will be very easy
for you to get rid of a harassing thoughts  faster, by focusing your  attention on
another happy thought. Those who cannot get rid of harassing thoughts languish in
mental asylums, and are labeled as lunatics. If something that makes you sad
happens to you what would you do? Can that be forgotten by focusing your mind
on something else temporarily? So that you could look at it when you are free,
say the following day.

This ability to move from one thought to another quickly is very useful in reducing
your unhappiness. The easiest method of moving out from such an embarrassing
situation is to move into a meditation mood,  and refresh your mind for a minute or
so, before focusing on some other things.

Analytical capabilities.
When a new thought comes into your mind, you must be able to analyze it to find
out whether it is useful or harmful. The skill to analyze a thought and classify it as
useful, pleasant, harmful or bad is very important because only one thought can
live in your mind at any one particular time. A new thought cannot enter the
mind until the one that it occupies is dead. Thoughts also have a life cycle. Once a
thought is born, it lives for a very short period and then dies giving way to another.
Therefore, unhappy and harmful thoughts should be replaced with pleasant and
useful thoughts, without allowing them to hang around. A living thought dies  when a
new objective is perceived by your mind. To increase the time span when you are
in a happy mood, you should reduce the time you spend in the grey area,
because you have only 24 hours a day, and a short  span of life.

All thoughts should be considered as your personal guests in your own home.
Receive them well, look at their usefulness and allow them to leave, if there is no
benefit. Only those thoughts that are dear and useful to you should be fed and
nurtured. When you are not organized, you can allow all sorts of thoughts, both
friendly and hostile, to come and disturb you. Unless you are careful they will take
refuge in your head.

Decision making
As  soon as a new thought enters into your mind, it has to be analyzed and
classified as useful, friendly, happy or as one that should not be entertained. With
that analysis, it is possible for us to decide whether to allow it to survive in our
system or kill it immediately—focus on a new object and generate a new thought.
Vacillation is harmful, because a dangerous thought might provoke you to get
deeper in to problems, thereby reducing your happiness levels.

The decision making theory is highly advanced and involves several processes.
Once a problem is identified, data has to be gathered, analyzed, alternative
solutions generated and the best solution is selected, before implementation.
Happiness will be elusive, if we  allow our emotions to be the basis of all our
decisions. When emotions take over a problem, it is difficult  for logic of the mind
to take  the control of the situation.

We have heard this story more than once:   “Although everybody says that he is
not suitable, I still love him and I just can’t forget him.” This is the type of decision
based on emotions. We must harness our  mind power to take decisions,
without allowing emotions to take an upper hand. Correct decision making skills
could reduce your  unhappiness substantially.

Memory
The necessity to improve the memory is being focused by the market in a major
way. What you read, see or hear is useful, only if you can retrieve that information
when you need to take decisions. If not, the time utilized in collecting that
information can be considered as wasted.

Whatever the profession, vocation or activity that you are involved in, you need
to remember at least the faces and names of the individuals that you meet on a
regular basis. If that is not possible, your effectiveness in that position decreases
considerably. Can you remember what your dinner  was on last Thursday? Or the
day before that? If you make an attempt,  regularly to review the things that you
wish to remember, you always can do it.

“Nothing is impossible for a mind that is strengthened by determination” Your mind
is the greatest asset you have.  You have to make use of it. The great qualities of
the mind will not appear unless and until you improve your memory,

Strength
If you wish to lift an object which weighs 10 kilos, you have to exert some power to
lift it. You might need more power to raise an object which weighs 20 kilos.

Your mind  can function with more power if you harness it. You can mobilize more
power for your mind by strengthening your mind. The strength of the mind is its
ability to withstand pressures. If you have taken a decision to improve your
standards of happiness, you should be able to stand by it and continue with that
decision, whatever the  circumstances are. I personally know of a certain person who
resolves on every  New Year day, not to smoke tobacco.  He makes that resolution
every year. Still he has not been able to stop it, even though he knows that it is
bad for his health. After two open-heart surgeries, he still continues, he says
with the approval of his doctor.

A person that has a mind which is not strong, can use meditation techniques to
give more power and strength to his mind. It is possible, but needs a greater
determination.
Meditation can refines your minds culture.

Determination
Determination is a unique medicine; and it is the only medicine that can cure your
laziness. Determination  is a human skill that every person should practise
regularly.  The success stories of people who have gone to the top of the ladder
with dogged determination are available in almost any book store. In this website
go to the page Vishistagaraya.

It is very easy to enter into this mode if you have  well defined objectives for which you are
committed. Overheard at a Tsunami refugee camp: “ I came here with only  a wet
dress. Although the waves have destroyed my entire family, my house and all my
assets, what they could not destroy was my determination. I am determined to get up
and continue with my life.”

Creativity
If you want to change your life or the levels of happiness that you enjoy today, you
got to create that castle in which you are planning to live in. That is not possible if
you are not able to use the skills of creativity. The creativity is the most sought
after attribute of the human brain. By horning your powers of creativity you can even
build a heaven on earth, because, there is nothing impossible for the human mind
It is counter productive to reinvent the wheel. But, you can take the concept and
recreate a wheel to suit your own requirements. Creative copying is what almost
everybody is doing today, in the market. That is how they add value to old
concepts.

Insight meditation is a technique developed by Lord Buddha some 2600 years ago.
It is also known as vipassana meditation. Exhaustive analysis is another
way of creating new ideas. All the guests in the Kingdom of The Happyraj
are provided with facilities to use their mind power to improve their powers of creativity.
It is one important place  where you can focus your own mind and enjoy the
serenity of creativity. Very high  ratings are given for happiness achieved through
creativity.

Focus
The uncontrolled mind is like a wild buffalo. It keeps on running all over and it can
do a lot of harm if not controlled. The mind,  likewise, will do a lot of harm to you if
you cannot bring  it under control.

To keep the mind under control means, focus it on things you want it to be
associated with at any one particular time. The mind pursues objects seen by the
eyes, picked up by the ears or nose. Sometimes, the tongue and the body could
pick up signals that make the mind wander. The controlled mind will not wander,
but stays where you want it to be. That is your ability to concentrate.

What happens if you get into a dark room and plug your ears and stay there for a
few hours, with your eyes shut? The mind should get original ideas when it is not
being lead by the other organs of the body. They are mostly from the past
experiences or the future plans. If you focus your mind on something that you really
do not know, for example curing your own sicknesses by mobilizing your mind
power, you might encounter some wonderful new ideas. It is worth trying.

Forgive
Forgiving is one of the main virtues that was extolled by Lord Jesus Christ. If you
can say: “I forgive all my enemies,”  ten times,  day after day, would you be more
stronger, mentally, or weaker? If you practise this, you will be surprised to realize
how it can reduce a lot of tensions. People keep on saying, what happens if my
enemies know this? No body knows what you are saying to yourself.

Patience
A group of researches who visited the female inmates in a prison, for
a feature   on the women's day, had found out that majority of them
were there because they did not have sufficient patience.

If you give life to an individual who has committed suicide, and ask a simple
question like, “Why did it happen?” One probable answer is that he has had no
patience to wait. On the other hand if we analyze most of the crimes
committed, it will appear that the criminal did not have the patience.
A patient mind is one that can withstand pressure when confronted with
unexpected results or events.A turbulent mind lacks the discipline of patience.
But a mind that has practised patience can control such  situations with much
ease.

Self  Confidence
The  ultimate result of developing all the skills mentioned above will result in the
development of confidence in your own abilities, competences and skills. We call
it self confidence. That is the belief that you have about your own self to do things
with the ultimate hope that you will be a success. When you have self
confidence, you will begin,to succeed both mentally and physically.
